It also has an engine capacity increase of around 3.6 liter range, yielding gains 20 hp (15 kW) for the Turbo version does not. 2002 also marked the start of production of the Porsche 996 Targa, featuring a sliding glass "Green House" roof systems such as type 993 predeccesor.

Porsche 996 - Cars

Porsche 996 sports car is the type and model of Porsche's "911" Carrera model sold from 1998 (Model 1999) through 2005, which will be replaced with type 997 Although some models are stored in While the production end of the transition. The debut will feature the most important changes to the Carrera model since its introduction in 1963, chief among these is the cold water filled the engine, replacing the previous cold-engine version used by Carrera. More stringent regulations and sound customer expectations for both refinement and performance make necessary switch. Other significant changes include a sleeker body too have been raked windshield and a new interior design. With these differences in mind many "purists" consider all of the car Porsche 996 is different at least in spirit than the Carreras that preceded it as opposed the original development.

2010 Porsche Panamera gets Test Drive

Let's cut to the chase: The 2010 Porsche Panamera is big, fast, and comfortable; a genuine four passenger Gran Turismo capable of loafing across continents in giant 130 mph bounds, leaving you relaxed and refreshed at the end of the day at the wheel. Press a few buttons, stiffening the suspension, quickening the seven speed PDK transmission's responses, allowing the deep-throated dual exhaust to breathe easier, and the Porsche Panamera is ready to tackle a snaking mountain pass with the panache of...well, a Porsche.
Is it, as some purists grumble, another Porsche too far; another unnecessary detour from the company's core values, like the Cayenne SUV? Well, the front engine, V-8 powered Panamera is certainly not a four door Porsche 911. The Porsche Panamera has a personality all its own. Yet Porsche DNA seeps from every pore.
You see, the Porsche Panamera has the same ready-for-anything combination of performance and practicality that made the Porsche 928 S4 one of the world's most underrated GTs. The Porsche Panamera Turbo is four second fast to 60 mph and will hit 188 mph. Yet the rear seats fold to boost the luggage capacity from 15.7 cu ft to 44.6 cu ft, just under what you can fit behind the third row of a Chevy Suburban, and Porsche offers a roof rack and a trailer hitch (as it did for the 928) as factory options. For the record, the Porsche Panamera is rated to tow a 4850 lb braked trailer or a 1654 lb unbraked trailer. Try that with your Ferrari...This car is designed to be a daily driver, not a valet parking showpony.

Three Porsche Panamera models will be available in the U.S. when the car launches on October 17. Entry level car is the two wheel drive, $89,800 Porsche Panamera S. It shares its 400hp naturally aspirated, direct injection 4.8-liter V-8 with the all-wheel drive, $93,800 Porsche Panamera 4S. Top of the range Porsche Panamera is the $132,600 Turbo, which boasts 500hp courtesy of a pair of turbochargers, and standard all-wheel drive. Although the Porsche Panamera S is available in Europe with a conventional six speed manual, all U.S.-spec Panameras will come standard with Porsche's new seven-speed PDK dual clutch manual transmission.

Porsche Panamera Hybrid come next year.

The past couple of months have seen a blitz is about Porsche Panamera series such as 94-story skyscraper in Shanghai released and the official world debut As a four-door Porsche have a V8-engine in many guises, but more economical engines are expected to arrive soon - as well as hybrid models.

Porsche 996 Turbo (2000-2004)

In 2000 Porsche launched the Turbo version of the Type Porsche 996. Like the Porsche 996 Turbo GT3, the new Turbo engine derived from the Porsche 911 GT1 engine and, like its predecessor, featured twin-turbos and now developed 420 bhp. Also like its predecessor the new Turbo was only available with 4 wheel drive. A $17,000USD factory option, the X50 package, was available that boosted the engine output to a tidy 444 bhp with 457 ft/lbs of torque across a wide section of the power band. With the X50 package in place the car could make 0-60mph in about 3.6 seconds.
Styling wise, the car was more individual than previous Turbos. Along with the traditional wider rear wings, the Porsche 996 Turbo had different front lights and bumpers when compared to the Carrera/Carrera 4. The rear bumper had air vents that were reminiscent of those on the Porsche 959 and there are large vents on the front bumper, which have been copied in the Carrera 4S and Cayenne Turbo models.

Porsche 996 GT3 (1999-2004)

Porsche unveiled a road-going GT3 version of the Porsche 996 series which was derived from the racing GT3. Simply called GT3, the car featured lightweight materials inside and out, including thinner windows, the Porsche 996 GT3 was a lighter and more focused Porsche 911 with the emphasis on handling and performance. The suspension was lower and more aggressive than other Porsche 996s, leading to excellent handling and razor-sharp steering though the ride was very very firm. Of more significance was the engine used in the Porsche 996 GT3. Instead of using a version of the water-cooled units found in other Porsche 996s, the naturally-aspirated engine was derived from the Porsche 911 GT1-98 sports-prototype racing car and featured lightweight materials which enabled the engine to rev highly.

Porsche 996 Series (1998-2004)

After 34 years in production the famous air-cooled Porsche 911 was replaced by an all-new water-cooled model. Known as the Type Porsche 996 this car was a major leap for Porsche, although many of the traits that made the 911 what it was during the past 34 years still remained with the new model. As with the Porsche 993 before it the Porsche 996 was also a significant model, but mainly for the way it was conceived and designed, and the effect it had on Porsche during the 1990s.
Pundits criticised the Porsche 996's styling a great deal, largely because it shared its headlamps—indeed much of its front end, mechanically—with the less expensive Boxster. The Porsche 996 had been on the drawing board first and was a more advanced car in some respects, but the cost-cutting seemed inappropriate for an expensive car. Otherwise, the Pinky Lai-penned shape followed the original Butzi Porsche design very closely. The interior was further criticised for its plainness and its lack of relationship to prior Porsche 911 interiors, although this came largely from owners of older 911s.
The Type Porsche 996 spawned over a dozen variations, including all wheel drive Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S models, the club racing-oriented GT3, and the forced-induction Porsche 996 Turbo and GT2. The Turbo, four-wheel-drive and twin-turbo, often made appearances in magazines' lists of the best cars on sale.
The Carrera and Carrera 4 underwent revisions for model year 2002, receiving the front headlight/indicator lights which were first seen on the Turbo version two years earlier. This allowed the Porsche 911 to be more distinguishable from the Boxster. A mildy revised front fascia was also intorduced, though the basic architecture remained.
Engine wise, displacement was 3.4 litres and power 300 PS (221kW), increased in 2002 to 3.6 litres and 320 PS (235 kW).

993 Turbo (1995-1998)

A Turbo version of the Porsche 993 was launched in 1995 and became the first standard production Porsche with twin turbochargers and the first Porsche 911 Turbo to equipped with all-wheel-drive (in order to delete the 4WD, one had to refer to the more powerful and race homlogated GT2). The similarity in specification and in performance levels inspired several comparison road tests with the Porsche 959 (f.e. Car and Driver, July 1997, p. 63).

Porsche 993 Series (1993-1998)

The Porsche 911 was again revised in 1993 and was now known as the Type Porsche 993. This car was significant as it was the final incarnation of the air-cooled Porsche 911, introduced in 1964.
The exterior featured an all new front and rear end, with only the windscreen, side windows and doors maintained from the previous Porsche 964. The revised bodywork was smoother, having a noticeably more aerodynamic front end somewhat reminiscent of the Porsche 959. Styling was by Englishman Tony Hatter under the supervision of design chief Harm Lagaay.
Along with the revised bodywork, mechanically the Porsche 993 also featured all-new multilink rear suspension that improved the car's ride and handling.
The new suspension, along with chassis refinements, enabled the car to keep up dynamically with the competition. Engine capacity remained at 3.6 litres, but power rose to 272 PS (200 kW) thanks to better engine management and exhaust design, and beginning with model year 1996 to 285 PS (210 kW). A new four-wheel-drive made a return as an option in the form of the Carrera 4, the rear wheel drive versions simply being called Carrera. A lightweight RS version saw capacity rise to 3.8 litres, with power reaching 300 PS (221 kW). The RS version had rear-wheel drive only.
Non-turbo models appeared that used the Turbo's wide bodyshell and some other components (the Carrera 4S and later the Carrera S).
The Targa open-topped model also made a return, this time with a large glass roof that slid under the rear window.
The Targa and wide-body versions remained in production in model year 1998, when the entirely new Porsche 996 was launched, the Porsche 993´s successor.

Porsche 964 Turbo (1990-1993)

In 1990 Porsche introduced a Turbo version of the Porsche 964 series. This car is sometimes mistakenly called Porsche 965 (this type number actually referred to a stillborn project that would have been a hi-tech turbocharged car in the vein of the 959). For the 1991 and 1992 model years, Porsche produced the Porsche 964 Turbo with the 930's proven 3.3L engine, improved to produce 320hp. 1993 brought the Carrera 2/4's 3.6L engine, now in turbo-charged form and sending a staggering 360hp to the rear wheels. With the Porsche 993 on the way, this car was produced through 1994 and remains rather rare.

Porsche 964 Series (1989-1993)

In late 1989 (and for the 1990 model year) the Porsche 911 underwent a major evolution with the introduction of the Type Porsche 964.
This would be a very important car for Porsche, since the world economy was undergoing recession and the company could not rely on its image alone. It was launched as the Carrera 4, the '4' indicating four-wheel-drive, a decision that surprised many but demonstrated the company's commitment to engineering by reminding buyers that race and rally engineering (of the 959) does affect road cars. Drag coefficient was down to 0.32. A rear spoiler deployed at high speed, preserving the purity of line when the vehicle was at rest. The chassis was redesigned overall. Coil springs, ABS brakes and power steering made their debut. The engine was increased in size to 3600 cc and developed 250 PS (184 kW). The car was more refined, but thought by some journalists to have lost some purity of the 911's concept. The rear-wheel-drive version, the Carrera 2, arrived a year later.
The Porsche 964 incarnation of the Porsche 911 Turbo returned in 1990 after an absence from the price lists, using a refined 3.3-litre engine of the previous Turbo, but two years later a turbo engine based on the 3.6 litre engine of the other models was introduced.
Porsche introduced the ahead-of-its-time 'Tiptronic' automatic transmission in the Porsche 964 Carrera 2, featuring adaptive electronic management and full manual control. The Porsche 964 was one of the first cars in the world offered with dual airbags standard (from 1991).
In 1992, Porsche re-introduced a limited-edition RS model, inspired by the 1973 Carrera RS and emissions-legal in Europe only. Appeals from American customers resulted in Porsche developing the RS America of which 701 were built. However, while European RS was a homologation special, RS America was a low spec variant of the regular model. The RS 3.8 of 1993 had Turbo-style bodywork, a larger fixed whale tail in place of the moveable rear spoiler, and a 300 bhp 3746 cc engine.
Since the RS/RS America was intended as a no-frills, higher performance version of the Porsche 964, there were only 4 factory options available: a limited-slip differential, AM/FM cassette stereo, air conditioning, and a sunroof. The interior was more basic than a standard Porsche 911 as well; for example the interior door panels lacked the armrests and door pockets and had a simple pull strap for the opening mechanism. Although RS America was about $10,000 cheaper than a fully-equipped C2 at the time of their production , these models now command a premium price on the used market over a standard Porsche 964 (RS Europe was about $20,000 more expensive than a C2).

Porsche 911 Series (1964-1989)

The Porsche 911 was developed as a much more powerful, larger, more comfortable replacement for the Porsche 356, the company's first model, and essentially a sporting evolution of the Volkswagen Beetle. The new car made its public debut at the 1963 Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung, better known to English speakers as the Frankfurt motor show.
It was designated as the 'Porsche 901' (Porsche 901 being its internal project number). Peugeot protested on the grounds that they owned the trademark to all car names formed by three numbers with a zero in the middle. So, before production started, the new Porsche had its name changed to Porsche 911. It went on sale in 1964.

History of Porsche 911

The Porsche 911 (pronounced as nine eleven) is a sports car made by Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany. The famous, distinctive and durable car has undergone continuous development since its introduction in 1964. Mechanically it is notable for being rear engined and, until the introduction of the all-new Type Porsche 996 in 1999, air-cooled. All 911s use six-cylinder boxer engines.
Since its inception the Porsche 911 has been modified, both by private teams and the factory itself, for racing, rallying and other types of automotive competition. It is often cited as the most successful competition car ever, especially when its variations are included, mainly the powerful Porsche 935.
In the international poll for the award of the world's most influential car of the twentieth century the Porsche 911 came fifth after the Ford Model T, the Mini, the Citroën DS and the Volkswagen

Porsche Still Considering Entry Level Model

Here's a rumour: Porsche wants to get in on the Mazda MX-5 act. According to a report by Automobilwoche, Porsche is still mulling over a possible entry level to come in at below the Boxster range.
The Zuffenhausen-based company has denied it is working on such a car but one executive has admitted that should it happen such a hypothetical car would be priced at between €33,000 and €35,000. Porsche's stronger alliance with Volkswagen would be financially ideal to use as a launch pad for a mid-engine roadster. Platform cousins would include a possible Audi R4 and/ or something based on the VW BlueSport Concept car. VW could also use its massive buying power to reduce production costs.
Likely engines would include the popular 1.4 TSI with 125kW (170hp) and possibly the 93kW (125hp) turbo diesel. Seeing that we are firmly in the world of speculation at this point, why not throw in that 2.0 TSI into the mix as well and make over 155kW (211hp) in the process? The Lotus Elise could be a benchmark for this category of car which would weigh in at about 1,000kg (2,200lbs).
VW and Porsche will do well to put their current and future relationship under careful management before collaborating on too many projects. Otherwise a situation similar to the unhealthy family feud between Audi and VW on some models could arise.

Porsche 996 Turbo

Just a little over a year ago I had the pleasure of taking the Porsche 996 Turbo on a 1500 mile trek. Boy I gotta tell you "what a way to travel!" If you really would like to take a trip in luxury this is definitely the way to go.Before you know it the miles have flown by. I've driven many Porsches over the years but this is one is extremely smooth and extremely comfortable allowing one to continuously drive for miles and miles without stopping for a break. Your body doesn't begin to ache and your car doesn't miss a beat. This is a car that is quiet and refined even when you are cruising down the road at 175 mph. I might add this isn't recommended for anyone who's not experienced or on a road that allows these speeds. Whether you are traveling on the straight and narrow or covering those twisty windy roads the Porsches 996 hugs the road and just keeps on moving. This is a car that lets you do absolutely anything with it while maintaining a true feeling of security. You get superior everything - steering, brakes, motor, and upholstery to name just a few. This is one awesome piece of machinery!

The Porsches 996 is a sports car through and through. And although based off the Carrera platform it has undergone substantial changes. Choose from a couple or cabriolet in either rear wheel drive or all wheel drive, complete with 3.4 liter engine.

The Porsches 996 has a fully water cooled engine, sleeker body, a steeply raked windshield, low noise, and a completely redesigned interior which makes it by all intensive purposes an entirely new car than the Carreras which is the platform for it.This is a car with 415 bhp which means it can do 0 to 60 mph in an impressive 3.9 seconds. The 3.6 liter twin turbo engine is very impressive! And that was just the performance of the first engine. 2002 saw the horsepower increase to 450.And then along came the GT variants. A little more light weight it was based on the RWD Carrera but the stripped down version which made it much lighter. In 2004 this car did 0 to 60 seconds in 4 seconds flat. It was followed by a whopping 477 hp that could do 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. There was also a special edition introduced in 2000 when the 911 Millennium version was released. This special edition had a violet chrome flair paint finish that stood out and beautiful leather interior with dark maple trim. It was available with an optional 6 speed manual shift. This special edition release was limited in numbers.Once you have driven the Porsche 996 turbo you'll instantly know what I'm talking about. Porsche produces a wonderful line of cars but the Porsches 996 is simply a step above the rest and you'll be wondering why you didn't find this gem earlier. It's the only way to travel!

TechArt Porsche 996 C4

Porsche folk are a divided lot, the rifts created by the factory as it has reinvented itself several times during the last 40 years. Remember the 968? Great car, one of the best handling sports cars this writer ever drove. Ask a 964 911 owner what he thinks of it. Chances are a front-engined watercooled Porsche is not what he'd consider a true Porsche.
Enter the 996. It still resembles the car Butzi designed some three decades ago, the engine sits in the rear and it kicks serious ass. Ask a 993 owner what he thinks of it. Chances are he probably prefers his aircooled 911.
Argue purity all you want, but the fact remains--the new 996, er, 911 will outperform its older sibling on any venue, and do more without ever breaking a sweat.
Despite its formidable talent, many say the new 996 hides too much, a "problem" TechArt addresses with its aerodynamic treatment and singular 18-in. running gear. The effect leaves the Porsche with a meaner but still handsome face. TechArt's rear wing is a bit more controversial; then again, so is the factory's biturbo unit. It works well at 120 mph, providing a few hundred pounds of additional downforce. TechArt's suspension appears to be well sorted. The car is markedly firmer, and the larger anti-roll bars aid in high-speed stability--the car feels the same at 50 mph as it does at 100 mph. Through the twisty bits, the 996 remains very flat and behaves with a decidedly neutral attitude--steering is perfectly weighted with excellent feedback. Over less-than-perfect roads, the TechArt 996 soaks up bumps fairly well, although bigger stuff makes the car a tad jumpy. It could be the car is faster than it actually feels--it's as if there's an extra filter in the 996.
The cabin was treated with bits from Porsche's GT3 pantry. The seats are GT3 buckets laced with matching Motorsport harnesses, and a GT3 rollover bar is situated just behind the driver's head. It looks all business, yet manages to be user friendly--the stuff is amazingly comfortable and non-intrusive while providing huge lateral support and the sensation of being part of the car. TechArt's pedal assembly works well--I could heel-and-toe even with my size-13 Doc Martens, and the abbreviated throws from the shifter made gear changes surgically precise. TechArt's three-spoke steering is beautiful, although its carbon-fiber trim becomes slippery with sweaty hands. I wonder if TechArt makes gloves?
In comparison to our long-term 996, the TechArt C4 has a substantially deeper voice, at idle and under full load. The car pulls hard, both out of the hole and all the way to seven grand--no flat spots, no spikes, just a huge forward surge.
Although our focus this issue is on the 993, I wanted to spend time in a modified 996 for comparative purposes. Just how much better is the newer car? Given the choice, which would I want? From a styling perspective, I'd choose a 993 C4S, just like the one on our cover. However, if I were being chased by terrorists up a mountain pass, the TechArt C4 would be my weapon of choice.

Porsche Panamera

Porsche Panamera, a unique four-seater, was conceived and designed as a four-door grand touring sports car, combining numerous talents in typical Porsche style: sporting driving dynamics, a spacious interior, and the supreme comfort of a Gran Turismo. Joining the 911, Boxster and Cayman sports cars as well as the Cayenne SUV, the Panamera is Porsche's fourth model series.
The Porsche Panamera designers have succeeded in positioning it as a brand-new and truly different model while retaining the looks of a typical Porsche. Through its proportions, the Porsche Panamera stands out in its market segment: measuring 76 inches wide and 55.8 inches in height, it is wider and lower than comparable four-door models. The unmistakable GT silhouette is created by the car's overall length of 195.7 inches and short, sporting overhangs. In its styling and details, the Porsche Panamera follows the design philosophy refined over decades on the 911 and successfully implemented on the Boxster, Cayman and Cayenne.

Porsche 996

The Porsche 996 is the company's internal name for the version of the Porsche 911 model manufactured and sold between 1998 and 2005. It has since been replaced by the Type 997. Both body styles were used in 2005, depending on model. At its debut, it featured the most significant changes to the Carrera model since its 1963 introduction. The most important among these is the fully water-cooled engine, replacing the previously air-cooled engines, used exclusively by the Carrera models. More stringent noise regulations and higher customer expectations for both refinement and a higher performance 4 valve per cylinder engine made the switch necessary. The Porsche 996 Carrera (not GT2, GT3 and Turbo models) engine is designed with what Porsche calls "integrated dry sump oiling". This "integrated dry sump" engine does not have an oil scavenge pump in the crankcase to pump the engine oil to a separate holding tank outside the crankcase as a true dry sump design would have. The only scavenge pumps in the Porsche 996 engine are in the camshaft boxes and the oil is pumped from there to the bottom of the crankcase as it would be in any "wet sump" engine. Other changes include a sleeker body with a more steeply raked windshield and a re-designed interior.
With these differences in mind, many "purists" consider the Porsche 996 to be an altogether different car since it is not air-cooled like the Porsche 993 and its predecessors all the way to the 356, at least in spirit, than the Carreras that preceded it, as opposed to being a development of the original.
